SATA Slimline

Slimline SATA Connectivity for Optical Drives & SFF Systems

Slimline SATA (also known as Slim SATA) is the industry standard for connecting slim optical disk drives (ODDs) in laptops, ultrabooks, and small form factor (SFF) desktops. Unlike standard SATA which uses separate 7-pin data and 15-pin power connectors, Slimline SATA integrates them into a single 13-pin (7+6) interface to save critical space.

Why Slimline SATA is Different

The defining feature of a Slimline connector is the 6-pin power section. Because laptop drives only require 5V power, the 12V and 3.3V rails found in standard 15-pin SATA connectors are eliminated. This makes the connector significantly smaller but requires specific adapters when installing these drives into a standard desktop PC.
